Immoral behaviors

On Monday, The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Peter Pace, said he considers homosexuality to be immoral and the military should not condone it by allowing gay soldiers to serve openly.

Although Mr. Pace said he supports the Pentagon's "don't ask, don't tell policy" in which gay men and women are allowed in the military as long as they keep their sexual orientation private.

What Sex Slaves?

Just when things seem to be calming down between China/Japan/Korea, Japanese prime minister, Shinzo Abe, drops a bombshell by stating that Japan never forced Chinese/Korean women into sexual slavery during World War II. On top of that, Mr. Abe and his fellow 120 LDP lawmakers are pushing to roll back a 1993 apology to sex slaves by a fellow LDP memeber, Yohei Kono.

Mr. Abe's statement regarding sex slaves contradicts Japanese documents which showed military authorities had a direct role in forcing Chinese/Korean women into slavery. These documents are backed up by accounts from soldiers and victims. You can read the rest of this story here.

Personally, I wasn't expecting Mr. Abe to reveal his true color until later this year but this latest statement from him isn't all that surprising considering this sort of rhetoric coming out of prominent Japanese politicians have been a common occurrence lately. And I'm sure these latest charades are part of Abe and his conservative party's attempt at trying to boost his sagging ratings by pandering to his nationalist constituencies.

In 2005, it was dokdo.. Last year it was about visiting yasukuni shrine which tries to justify Japan's wartime atrocities and now it's denial of Japan's involvement in forcing women into sexual slavery..on a Korean national holiday to commemorate 1919 independence movement..
It should be pretty obvious by now why a lot of people in China/Korea feel Japan has never been sincere about their apologies.

So, let's sum up current Japanese policy towards Korea:
Hey, everyone! N.K. agents abducted a handful of Japanese people so we'll do everything in our power to bring this issue up at the expense of possibly derailing the N.K. nuke talks but what we did in Korea?..fuggedabouit!

Japan..I salute you for doing everything in your power to bring constant friction in East Asia.

It's been about a year since the Xbox 360 launched in North America and Japan . So far, Microsoft's newest console has been a success here but unfortunately the system is still having trouble being accepted by the japanese gaming crowd not unlike the original xbox. This game footage of a much anticipated, at least among the u.s xbox 360 fans, action game titled Lost Planet shows MS and its 3rd party developer's newest tactic to appeal the system to hardcore japanese gamers.

So, Japan's Prime Minister, Mr. Koizumi, states people should stop making a big deal out of his visits to the Yasukuni shrine. Frankly, I don't have any problems with Mr. Koizumi visiting shrines to pray for those who lost their lives in wars. But when he, especially while in his position as the leader of Japan, visits a shrine that propagates revisionist history, worships class-A war criminals as deities, etc. expect other countries who've suffered greatly under Japan's aggression to make some noise.

What really irks me is Koizumi's condescending responses to China and South Korea's protests over his visits to the shrine. I thought this whole shrine trying to justify Japan's past aggression, worshipping class-A war criminals as deities were pretty obvious reasons to be upset about..

No matter what Mr. Koizumi or any other Japanese politicans say, when they insist on going to the Yasukuni shrine despite what it stands for, in my opinion, it's a tacit approval of the shrine's views. So, I can empathize with some people's assertion that Mr. Koizumi and many Japanese people aren't truly sorry for their past atrocities, just truly sorry that they lost the "Greater East Asian War"(WW2)..

Card captor sakura is this Japanese animation about a junior high school girl which was highly popular in the late 90s. What I remeber most about the animation wasn't its content but rather a spoof of the first opening(there were several different openings for the animation) done by some Japanese geeks.

Xbox 360 noise

So I finally got my xbox 360 bundle yesterday and all I can say is wow. This thing is really loud. Hear it for yourself.

Xbox 360 starting up.. It's louder than my 2 office computers(p4 3ghz) and my laptop combined.

And this is the noise my xbox 360 makes when playing games.

Unless you want to put up with this kind of ear-numbing noise, I would hold off on buying one until Microsoft can figure out a way to reduce the noise level. I'm afraid to even turn it on anymore!

I haven't been following the world baseball classic all that much until this past Sunday when Team USA eeked out a controversial victory over Japan. I assumed the U.S. would probably face off against the DR for the championship but boy was I wrong. Yesterday, I came home just in time to watch Mexico beat Team USA which eliminated the U.S from the WBC tournament..ugh..lost to canada and mexico?? WTF!!
Anyway, while I was looking for some more info on this WBC, I came across few interesting quotes made by some Japanese players. This was said by Ichiro Suzuki before the WBC: "I want to win in such a fashion that they [the Koreans] won't think they can beat us for 30 years." And after Japan lost its first game against Korea, Suzuki was quoted as saying "I feel ashamed of this defeat."
Tomoya Satozaki, after learning they had made into the WBC semifinals thanks to Mexico beating the U.S., proclaimed "As someone who makes baseball his life -- and this has nothing to do with the WBC -- for the sake of Japanese baseball, we cannot lose to Korea a third time. We are prepared, and I am confident of victory."
I guess a bit of the old Nipponese Greater East-Asian Co-Prosperity nationalism is good for Japan/Korea rivalry, ne? Banzai!!

On the way home from work I stopped by a local target store to buy snacks and household goods. While I was looking at household cleaners, a lady in her 40's casually initiated a conversation with me. She said the product I picked out is very good and vouched for its effectiveness by stating that her housemaid said it's good....erm yeah thank you for the info..
We were chatting about useless things until she suddenly asks what kind of job I have..I was a bit baffled by her question but told her I work for some small company..She then proceeds to ask whether I like the job then before I can even reply she asks if I would like a job? But I just said I work for a small but very nice company.. The lady says I won't have to quit my current job, just work for her..It took me a few secs to figure out what she really meant..Of course being the gentlemen that I am, I politely declined her offer with a smile. I said I like my current job which pays me handsomely and don't have time for other jobs..Understandably things were a bit awkward afterwards so I quietly moon-walked away from the spot..
Next time I shop at my local target store, I'll be sure to bring along a hooker or somebody..

A Police Chief in Texas, why am I not suprised, was suspended for 10 days for making this comment : "as long as I'm police chief, we won't have any gooks in this department".

Teens sent to prison for lynching
5 white teens in South Carolina, I see a pattern here, were senteced from 2 1/2 to 6 years in prison for beating and trying to lynch a black kid.

Although I don't subscribe to people should "tolerate" people of different race and/or nationality since that can be taken as "I don't like those people because they look different so I'll just ignore them", at least it's a start. Those people mentioned above even lack the basic level of tolerance which unfortunately is a rather common thing even in the "greatest country" in the world.

All this is just another proof that "Modern man is the missing link between apes and human beings."

Kentucky's governor wants Intelligent Design taught as science.

Kentucky's governor, Fletcher, at his state of the common wealth speech advocated for teaching Intelligent Design as science in Kentucky schools.
I find it quite amusing that in the same speech, the governor espoused :

“Educational achievement and Kentucky’s economic future go hand in hand,” Fletcher said. “To improve education we must keep and attract quality educators.”

This is just so priceless. We have Kansas board of education redefining science to include supernatural means and now a governor advocating for thinly veiled religion to be taught as science. Republicans always bemoan about how liberals, "activist" judges are trying to circumvent the U.S. constitution but the repugs are actually doing the very same thing they're falsely accusing liberals and judges of doing. Hello, separation of church and state? You repubs who claim to be holier than liberals/democrats/independents have heard of that, right?

We've admonished Muslim countries for their inability to separate government and religion. We've mocked them as having third rate governments for letting religion influence government policies yet the very same reasoning we give to admonish, mock and justify claims of why there appear to be so many fundamental extremists in Arab world is happening here, in America, right now. Preaching something you don't practice is one of the prime reason why so many people around the world despise America. Current Intelligent Design debacle is yet another shining example of American hypocrisy at its finest.

Crime in Japan

Lately, there has been some rumbling in japan in regards to rise in crime rate among foreign residents. The japanese media has been relentless at portraying foreigners especially asian immigrants as the biggest contributor to rise in overall crime rate. This could be true but the media neglects to mention rise in crimes committed by good ol' nihonjin people. You'll be surprised to find out where those passive japanese rank in the data. Another case of japanese media ignoring the problems within their society by blaming them on something else or completely refusing to report them.. just like when a special u.n envoy to japan who was there at the behest of japan declared racism in japan is deep rooted, even 2 days after the announcement only one prominent japanese language news paper, yomiuri shimbun, had a small blurb on that matter.

When the venerable nyt covers a story, especially one concerning asia, you know it's a rather big issue..Although several months too late, the new york times delves into the latest china/japan/korea controversy which revolves around the popularity of two anti-korea and anti-china books in japan.

Japan's disdain for china and korea is nothing new but might be a revelation to many westerners as japanese are so adept at tatemae and honne. And westerners especially Americans' perception on animosity between china, japan, korea have something to do with western media's portrayal of the situation where most of the news from east asia regarding the tensions between the 3 nations had been depicted as one-sided; korea and/or china's animosity and hate toward japan but the media hardly ever mention ordinary japanese people's hate/bias toward koreans and chinese. The nyt's article brings some light into japan's true feelings toward her neighbors and her tendency to look down on korea, china albeit in a much subdued and subtle way.

As with many of Mr. Onishi's articles relating to china, japan, korea relationship this article lacks depth and goes out of its way to avoid criticizing past and current japanese society which promotes and turns a blind eye to hate mongering but it's good to see at least one U.S. media outlet has decided to show a glimpse of true japan with the usual friendly facade stripped away.

A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words

While doing my daily browsing at work, I came across an article on apparent rise of violence against Asians in the states. Now many Asians would attest that this isn't something new and avid readers of Angry Asian Man site will be all too familiar with these kind of stories. What really captured my attention was a picture that was accompanying the article which I posted below.

This photo is truly the case of a picture being worth a thousand words.. It seems to perfectly reflect the perpetual foreigner image of Asian Americans in America..but what do I know..

I happened to come across this interesting article stating that Chiba Tatsuya of ashita no joe fame had been misquoted by a korean newspaper, donga-ilbo. This all stems from when a fan of Tatsuya asked him at a cartoon convention, which was held in korea, regarding the anti-korean book that's a huge hit in japan which sold 300,000 copies in one month and not coincidently spawning a sequel.. Mr. Tatsuya's answer was he can't really comment on something that he isn't really familiar with but expressed disappointment on popularity of such one-sided book and offered an apology to the questioner. Apparently donga interpreted that unintentionally or intentionally as an offering of apology on behalf of japanese comics.

Now, people being misquoted happens all the time but what really struck me was that on Mr. Tatsuya's website, he had to express how he was misquoted by donga-ilbo with a big bold red link to a page explaining how he had been misquoted. I mean how many letters from ordinary japanese folks flaming that japan shouldn't have to offer an apology for something she did more more than 60 years ago did he get before putting up this big bold red link on his site?

When people tell me ordinary japanese really feel remorseful of their country's sinful past, to that I ask why are they keep voting for right-wing politicians who claim nanjing massacres never happened, claim majority of "comfort women" are fakes and remind them that no japanese politicians ever apologized, as a representative of the japanese government or on behalf of japan, for their atrocities committed during the brutal occupation of Korea. This is in stark contrast to the apology U.S government offered to japan for the japanese interment camp incident. And the japanese people still bring the interment camp issue up yet when koreans talk about the insincerity of japan's hallow apologies, japanese and their apologists cry out korea is still "bitching" about something happened "long time ago".. This is just yet another example of how majority of japanese aren't remorseful of their country's past atrocities.

Leaving Las Vegas

For the past few days my boss and I along with our consultants and 2 folks from our asia branch, had been in sin city for business. Meetings with our clients went very well, and we found a new client who seem to be very keen on acquiring our products. Our new client, whom I'll refer to as "A", say they're innovators in their field..To that, I said yea right..you guys are from Canada! Anyway despite A's rather diminutive size, only rev of $20 mil a year and I'm not really sure if that's in Canadian dollar or U.S.., it's good we are managing to get clients even from remote place like Canada. We need to explore new uncharted, wild markets and Canada fits that billing. Heh I kid! I love Canada! America's 51st state! ;d Everything business related was a tremendous success but well non-business related things were lets just say didn't go as well as I had hoped for...

The day before my last stay, I went to some upscale club on my driver's recommendation. I was minding my own business having a drink by myself, ok a female "entertainer" talked to me for a little bit until I told her to bugger off, when some sharply dressed fellow sat next to me. Not sure who initiated the conversation between him and I but once we started to talk, I knew he was a very interesting person. Apparently he writes and directs plays in south america. He told me about what plays he wrote and directed in south america, etc. I listened intently as someone who has some artistic background, I am always happy when I come across a person with such artistic talent and passion for his/her craft.

As the night deepened, this latin guy tells me how joyous it was for him that I was so willing to talk to some stranger with funny accent and tell him about my person life. Granted I hadn't planned on telling this guy about what I do for a living, etc but hell we were having drinks and he told me about his personal life so I had no choice! After proclaiming how happy he was, he suddenly, in a shy voice, tells me if I wanted to hear a secret..Uh oh..Now, I don't want to be rude especially to someone whom I had spend the last hour talking about very interesting things..so I just bit the bullet and told him yeah sure..Well lo and behold he proclaims he's gay..Well ofcourse! play write/director, likes musicals, dressed too sharply for a typical las vegas crowd.. After that, our conversation degenerated into sexual overtures by this latin lover..Now I like the guy as a person and before someone gets the wrong idea, I don't have anything against gay folks but when the last few sentences consist of "I need a good lover, that I'm a young sexy boy, what happens in vegas stays in vegas, nobody will know.." it gets a bit upsetting.. It's just too bad it turned out the way it did as I really wouldn't mind just talking with him about south america's contemporary arts,music, etc..

So in the end, this guy was engaging in a conversation with me for the prospect of getting laid, not because he and I shared common passion for art..That's what upset me, not because I got hit on by some gay person. I've got hit on by gay folks before, and I am usually flattered but this time it was upsetting for the reasons I've explained above..I politely declined his ovetures. He then insisted on taking me to my place since that's the polite thing to do in latin america...uhh no..I think i'll have so more drinks..really really strong ones...He finally relented and left..I sat there alone and drank for maybe 30 mins til some pretty young thang came along and sat next to me..Now finally, a princess in a nice albeit revealing dress comes to rescue this lonely sexy prince in distress!! After talking for a good while buying her couple drinks..she says lets dance and after that she'll "entertain" me..oh shucks..not another "entertainer"! sigh...I just told the lovely lady..maybe tomorrow...
Why am I attracting "entertainers"..or gays when I just want regular laides?? I have no idea where it all went wrong but I'm glad to be back in my boring, old, quiet home..

I've been told the trip was fruitful as he was able to make deals, revise deals, buy more patents, etc. Those became all secondary when I heard he brought some gifts for us from asia! I was excited and curious as to what kind of gift he bought for me. As his protégé, I was expecting some sort of fancy, exotic asian goodies so I was rather disappointed to find out what he brought me was a rolex watch. First thing that crossed my mind was, is he trying to remind me in a subtle way that don't be late for work? As I don't usually wear a watch, maybe the boss presumed by giving me a watch, I would be more inclined to check the time and be on time for work..Har!! As I thanked my boss for the gift, he gleefully mentions how he bought this fake rolex in China and unlike other Chinese knockoffs, this is a good quality fake as it was made in Korea.. Ah yesh..xie xie boss!

Old ajushi san nakji tagged me yet again, this time the question is 20 stupendously interesting things about yourself. I've been mulling over this for the past few days and realized I can't think of anything interesting about myself..To illustrate my point, I've done this illus..hah! I'm funny. Anyway this is my daily life..

1. 7:30 AM : Get up around 7:30 AM to get ready for work. Work is only about 20 mins away but boy once I hit the showers, time just flies so I have to get up early..

2. 7:50 AM : I'm back to sleep on the couch..

3. 9:20 AM : I'm yet again late to work for the ..lost count!!

4. 11 AM : As you can see, I take my job very seriously..

5. 5.30 PM : After a hard day's work, drained from brow..working, I come home and relax by watching Animal Planet's "the planet's funniest animals" show..

6. 1 AM : Back to sleep

As you can see from the above illustrations, my life isn't exactly..exciting..hence there isn't any opportunity for interesting things to happen around me..

Movie scenes:

Honestly, I don't remember sobbing uncontrollably after watching a movie. I've had some movies that made me say "oh my gosh, that's sad! zoink!" or made me sort of tear up though..Here's a list of movie scenes that made me sad..

1) Leon - When Leon bids farewell to Mathilda.

2) Platoon - Memorable scene where you see William Dafoe being chased by vietcongs (made me sad and angry).

3) Kor movie 1 - When Kyosuke tells Hikaru to take a hike..

4) Grave of the fire flies - When the little girl dies which inturn causes her brother to die out of grief..depature from the usual happy movies that come out of studio ghibli..( This sort of movie isn't something I usually see, but it was showing on IFC so I got suckered into watching it..)

5) Chasing Amy - When Banky professes his love to his best buddy,Holden and gets totally rejected.

Today I decided to get my lazy butt off the couch and go do some shopping. For the past few weeks I've been living off pizzas, chinese food, wendy's, etc so I was craving for something different..somthing good and nutritional! Thankfully there's a Korean super market about 30 min from my apt (15-20 min if I go 80 mph which I do ;b) so I made my way to that place. After wondering through the place, these are what I bought:

Yes, you guessed it! Nutritional Korean food! Ace crackers are so good..especially with coffee!
I was going to buy some spicy korean rice thingies and kimbop but heck who needs those when you have ace and homerun ball!

Well well, my new digi-cam has finally arrived. I had it delievered to my work so I can start taking pics right away! It's a decently priced entry-level camera but no case and seems a bit small. Anway here are few photos I took..

At the urging of my boss and few other folks, I've finally decided to(forced to) take golf lessons..
I really rather not play golf but when I have get togethers with our clients, golfing is the thing they usually want to do..why!
So I went to get me some golf lesson yesterday. $50 for 30 min lesson..in that time frame, I learned how to hit/graze the ground with my clubs, the ball and was taught golf is like baseball! whoohoo~ Since one can't learn anything in 30min, I was coerced into signing up for 5 more lessons..we'll see how this goes..Things I have to do to make some money..sigh..
btw can anyone recommend me a good digital camera? No canon cams please as my previous one was canon which was so-so..besides I rather not support a company that thinks nanjing massacre never happend..

Wow, I can't believe it's been almost a month since my last post! So far, all is well in San Diego except I got a really bad sun burn. My skin was peeling off like snake sheding its skin..
I live next to one of the richest town in the u.s!! whoohoo. My town is rather boring but at least my company is pretty close to the beach. I can see the ocean from my office window. I would u/l few photos but I don't know how to transfer pics from my cell phone to my laptop..;/
Now as for new comics..I forgot to bring my scanner! well there're scanners at work but someone in my position can't be using scanners to scan drawing during work hour..! Well I could, but I just don't have anything decent to scan ;b
Now that I'm pretty comfortable with my new surrounding, I can start relaxing and doodling away like the old days..

Korean culture is popular all over the world these days, including Japan. As part of the so-called Kan-Ryuu, or “Korean Wave”, Japanese feminine-types are watching Winter Sonata and swooning over its star, Bae Yong Joon (as reported in an earlier Japundit post), Korean barbeque continues to be a favorite family Friday-nite treat in Japan, and, just to prove idiocy is international, treacly Korean pop is gaining popularity across Asia. The Korean tourist board has a fair and balanced view of the Korean Wave phenonmenon here.

But guess what’s the number one-ranking book on Amazon Japan right now? That’s right, Ken-Kan-Ryuu, which loosely translates as the Anti-Korean Wave. According to the publisher, the manga book tracks the intellectual awakening of an “ordinary” high school student who finds history hard, but has the “vague understanding that Japan has done bad things to Korea.” Everything changes when he becomes a university student and realizes the “surprising truth about Korea and its history.”

After publishers “refused” to print the book for two years, the book was finally released last week. Already a bestseller, Amazon Japan warns that delivery of Ken-Kan-Ryuu should take two to three weeks (Amazon Japan usually delivers in two or three days).

In the case of Ken-Kan-Ryuu, it is indeed possible to judge a book by it’s cover. “This is an extremely dangerous book,” the book jacket warns. “Why did Korea invade Japan’s territory, the Takeshima Islands?” screams another blurb. “There is no need to apologize to Korea or offer reparations,” shouts another.

The ever-useful “Ninki Blog Ranking” lists the most-viewed Japanese blogs in a number of different categories. There are blogs for mothers who wish to help their children study more effectively, blogs devoted to tracking the movements of celebrities, and blogs that discuss the best way to diet. And, like any other online community, Japan has no shortage of blogs devoted to punditry, with most of the discussion focusing on the deteriorating relationship amongst Japan and its Asian neighbours, China and the two Koreas.

According to the blog rankings, Japanese bloggers are in no mood for reconciliation. And despite the popularity of all things Korean in Japan, the so-called Kan-ryuu, or Korean Wave, many bloggers are taking aim at Korea.

Choose (what you believe) Carefully! Information on Korea is the sixth most popular blog in Japan right now, according to Ninki Blog Ranking, and bills itself as an antidote for the Japanese “mass media’s tendency to beautify Korea.”

Other popular political blogs include (currently the 7th most popular Japanese-language blog),We Don’t Need No Kan-ryuu (ranked at number 11), and The Truth About Asia - what the mass media doesn’t tell you about China and Korea (occupying 12th place).
Historical revisionism has gained popularity in Japan over the last decade. While many apologists for Japan’s wartime past are simply obnoxious at worst, such as Tokyo governor Shintaro Ishihara, there are other hip, charismatic commentators like Yoshinori Kobayashi, author of the popular Sensou-ron series of manga books, who are adept at arguing that, thanks to the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan was a victim rather than a victimizer during the last war.

Other arguments percolating through the Japanese blogosphere state that Japan was pushed into the war by the Unites States, and that Japan was actually liberating Asia from European colonizers with the hopes of fstering autonomy and independence of all nations, economic progress, and the eradication of racial discrimination.

That's the good old Japan we all know and love! It's only a matter of time before the Japanese govt chooses that ken-kan-ryuu manga as j.h history textbook..
Not long ago there was an incident in Japan where some Japanese politicians(think 34) pressured a publisher to suspend publication of a manga depicting Nanjing massacre because as the Japanese politicians claim, the massacre never happened and no proof that it did.. And now this manga titled ken-kan-ryuu is the best seller.. What next, Japan depicting itself as the victim of pacific war..?(being sarcastic)
